We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Legacy Watch Co. for our debut Special Project Series. Our collaboration is founded on a shared mission: to champion independent watchmaking and to serve the collector community. Legacy Watch Co. has been a great supporter of ZLTD since Series 1, notably contributing to the high-quality photography and videography used to showcase our timepieces. For that, Raf and I are genuinely heartened and grateful for their continuous support. Check out their IG page on this link.
Fun fact: Originally, the Guilloche Dial was supposed to be done in a 'Salmon' colour but we decided to switch it to blue because the founder of Legacy Watch Co. said that blue was his favourite colour. For fans of the blue dial, please express your thanks to him. :)
Since launching Series 1, we have made progress in our manufacturing and finishing capabilities and with that, we wanted to re-imagine how we would relaunch Series 1 if we were to do it all over again but with the current knowledge and equipment that we currently have.
For our Special Series No.1; our goal remained the same, which is that we wanted to create a great dress watch by integrating crucial design elements that we know collectors appreciate.
38.5mm case diameter for a refined presence.
A compact lug-to-lug of 44.5mm to suit most wrists elegantly.
Manual Wind movement but at just 7.75mm in thickness for a sleek, understated profile.
Dual lug holes for seamless compatibility with both curved and straight straps for versatility.
A thoughtfully crafted lug design that merges the classic "cow horn" and "teardrop" forms.
Downward-sloping lugs engineered for ergonomic wear.
A returning signature from Series 1, the guilloché dial is reborn in the Special Series. But this time around, it features true hand-guilloché, cut by an Artisan using a traditional Rose Engine.
For the guilloche design, we went with a Oscillating Wave Guilloche pattern that is executed radially, emanating from the center pinion. The oscillation of the waves is tightly concentrated in the middle and expands outward. This creates a mesmerizing "vortex" or "whirlpool" effect that draws the eye directly to the center of the dial.
The Guilloche is then coated with a vibrant, translucent blue lacquer finish. This provides incredible visual depth and allows the incredible guilloche grooves to be accentuated.
Continuing the demanding craft of mirror/black polishing, you'll see this commitment reflected in every hour index on the dial. Each one undergoes a meticulous, multi-stage process: laboriously polished with various grits of sandpaper, then refined to perfection with pegwood and successive grades of diamond paste. Once polished, each index is then carefully installed onto the dial, piece by piece.
For fans of our polished stick indexes, we are glad to say that we are featuring them at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 position and attaching them on the chapter ring instead of the dial.
However, as a brand, we are continuously challenging ourselves to refine on our past designs with every new series. With that, we are glad to introduce our new rounded index, meticulously embedded into the chapter ring at every 5-minute position. Each of these rounded indexes is individually crafted, polished, and manually installed, piece by piece, to provide exceptional visual depth and precision.
The design evolution of our indexes was guided by a single principle: how to maintain the brilliance of our polished elements without obscuring the beautiful underlying guilloche dial.
As our brand aesthetic evolves, we are introducing our signature hand style with a design that will define our future series of watches. Drawing inspiration from the different forms of traditional spear tips, we have created hands that are both highly legible and visually distinctive, reflecting our commitment to bespoke design at every level.
For the hour hand, it is a tapered hand that culminates in a prominent, sharp, geometric spear tip. However, to increase legibility, the main body of the hand widens slightly before the tip. Combining the legibility of a broad hand with the sharp precision of a spear tip.
For the Minute hand, the stem tapers towards the base of the spear tip and it's designed to align perfectly with the minute/second track on the chapter ring for increased legibility.
For the seconds hands, we designed a classic, extremely thin needle or baton hand with a simple diamond shaped spear tip counterweight at the pinion end to help balance the visual weight of the long pointer.
All 3 hands have been meticulously mirror-polished and left untempered to a colour, specifically to create a contrast against the brilliant blue Guilloche and to complement the other polished elements such as the indexes.
For the minute markers and brand name, they are firstly engraved on the Chapter Ring before being meticulously hand-filled using Japanese Cashew Urushi lacquer. This specific lacquer allows for exceptionally sharp, durable, and aesthetically rich detailing and is chosen for its superior depth and semi-gloss finish.
We've also implemented a key refinement to the chapter ring with its inner edge now featuring a high-polished finish as seen in the top left corner of the 2nd Chapter Ring photo. This provides a subtle gleam that captures light beautifully and creates a subtle yet impactful visual effect as light interacts with the watch.
For the Special Project Watch, we are featuring a manual wind movement that has been born from an extensive in-house adaptation of the reliable Sellita SW210 base. Firstly, we replaced the conventional brass components with custom-manufactured stainless steel bridges as while this material choice is a technical challenge, it enables us to achieve a higher degree of polish on the chamfers (anglage). We have also made changes to the architecture of the movement and it now features a three-quarter plate finished with a circular Côtes de Genève (a subtle, dynamic variation on the classic straight line finishing). Lastly, our brand logo has been engraved on the movement and the engraving has been handfilled with Japanese Cashew Urushi Lacquer.
While the current movement features Ratchet wheels with a 'snailing' finish, please note that the 10 production pieces will be upgraded with mirror polished ratchet wheels instead.
Due to the extensive augmentations done on the SW210 movement, we have cheekily decided to call this movement as our 'RD210' movement.
Focusing on both form and function, the watch features a fully polished steel case and this is a deliberate choice to enhance its dress watch elegance. Beyond its refined appearance, the case is engineered for comfort as well. Its downward-sloping lugs and compatibility with curved straps ensure an ergonomic design that naturally conforms to your wrist, making it a pleasure to wear.
The chosen knurled crown design also provides a distinctly modern aesthetic with a slimmer profile, yet it retains the familiar, effortlessly smooth winding action celebrated in the onion crown of our Series 1.
We have always believed that the wearing experience of a dress watch depends significantly on the quality of the strap. Continuing our partnership with Atelier Kai for his amazing straps, every strap is meticulously hand-stitched and tailored to each customer's specific wrist size.
For the Special Series No.1 Watch, Atelier Kai shared a unique leather that he managed to source and once we saw it, we knew it will be the perfect fit. The alligator leather has a highly dynamic patina that blends deep blues and near-black tones with stark, contrasting white or light blue highlights within the grooves and edges of the scales. This marbled or patinated finish ties the strap directly to the rich blue color of the guilloché dial.
With that, we have named the strap as the 'Arctic Vein Alligator Strap'.
For the Special Project - No.1 Series, only 10 pieces will be made and as they are made to order, we expect deliveries to begin approximately three-four months after your purchase.
The watch will be retailed at CHF$2,835/ SGD $4,575/ USD $3,500 (excluding taxes).
